I remember that as a boy, there was only one club for me – Arsenal. Ferenc Puskas
The final installment of my World Cup Special heroes – this little fella is overlooked as one of the great footballers of all time. He scored 157 goals in 187 appearances for Real Madrid in the 1950’s. The quote is lovely, and reminds us that after the final on Sunday, attention will once again be on domestic football, which starts in just a few weeks in the UK.
Whilst looking for quotes – I also found this one about Puskas:
Look at that little fat chap. We’ll murder this lot. An unidentified English opponent before the 1953 game between England and Hungary (England lost, 6-3)
It just goes to show – never underestimate a little fat chap.

Speed is often confused with insight. When I start running before the rest, I appear faster. Johan Cruyff
To some, the greatest footballer ever – arguably the best European footballer ever. I love this quote.

Never change a winning team. Sir Alf Ramsey. 1920 – 1999
But, the moment it starts to fail, change it quickly.

If you never concede a goal, you’re going to win more games than you lose. Bobby Moore.
But you still need to score some goals to do that…as another great football icon said, “the more times you shoot, the more times you’ll score”.

Enthusiasm is everything. It must be taut and vibrating like a guitar string. Edison Arantes do Nascimento – Pele
So, here we go, the hopes of 32 nations in the hands of a small group of talented artists. From what we’ve seen of the run-up, if enthusiasm won you the trophy, South Africa would be lifting it today.
Good luck to every nation.
