Avoiding awful headlines

So, George Michael is arrested after being found slumped over the steering wheel of his car in London – maybe he was listening to his last album, he wouldn’t need drugs to fall asleep then.

St Valentines Day

My day…7.30 flight to Dusseldorf, cancelled – arrived in Dusseldorf by another airline, one hour late. 90 minute car ride to Maastricht. 4 hour meeting. 90 minute car ride back. Flight back to the Heathrow. Arrive home 8.20pm. Always, always thinking of her…

Is it me…

…or does this story just sound absurd? MP’s are issued laptops, which have wifi and bluetooth disabled by default – mainly because there is no wifi in the House of Commons. This is the seat of government and someone has not deemed it necessary for it to be fully wifi enabled? No wonder the government is running around trying to implement ineffective policies on Education, Crime, Immigration and Respect. Maybe if this guy could have got his email, he wouldn’t have popped down the pub so much.

Ten golden rules

Interesting reading – the ten golden rules of managing at Google – we could all learn from a few of these.

Quiet here…

I’ve just finished rebuilding my PC at home, its much faster and smoother now without a lot of crap on it. I’ll update shortly on a movie marathon that I had, and some new music.

Xbox for sex?

None of these offers appealed to me…but if you have your Xbox360, and would like to help a desperate fanboy get his hands on one…all you have to do is…

Project Gotham Racing 3

Project Gotham Racing 3 (Xbox 360) With my current Xbox 360 obsession, it may make sense to ignore anything I say about computer games until the novelty wears off – but bugger that, I have to talk about Project Gotham Racing…which takes car racing to a new level for me. The actual racing is excellent, quick, responsive cars fly round lifelike tracks (they even have the newspaper kiosk in Piccadilly Circus) at breakneck speeds. The tracks are tough enough to challenge you, but quick enough to actually require some driving skills to get round. You can earn kudos points in the game to unlock levels and cars, and credit for winning racing and passing tasks in the career mode….all of that is fairly standard (despite being delivered very well), but where the game really comes into its own – is the online play, which is astounding. Assuming you have an Xbox Live account (which you really should if you have a 360), you can log on and join into races…up to 8 slots in each race. There seems to be a bit of group think going on as the racers decide on car class and track, an then a few seconds later the race starts…and its hell for leather time. Everyone is different when they race, some preferring the combat style of ramming you off the track, and some taking the racing line and trying to get round smoothly and quickly. I just try to stay on the tracks. Its astounding stuff, very very fast and well executed…I’m not a hardcore gamer, but this is the first compelling reason for buying a console that I have seen.

Xbox 360 – moving into the 21st century

So, whilst I was in the US – I bought the Xbox 360 wireless adapter, a little doofer which plugs into one of the USB slots on the rear of my 360, and then clips onto the grille. It looks like an Ipod Shuffle…with a little grey antenna poking up 2 inches. Once installed, it found my home network in a matter of seconds, from the Xbox Dashboard I went to network settings and it was already acquiring an IP address. So my next puzzle was getting it to find my PC, so it could stream some music.

I quickly ran upstairs to my PC – and went to xbox.com – to see what I needed to do next – it was simple. I downloaded the software from this page, and my PC decided what it wanted to share – I told it the right things to share, and lo and behold, it found my Xbox and started sharing.

A quick run downstairs told me everything was working – and within 10 minutes of clipping that little doofer to the back on my Xbox 360 – I was in the 21st century – listening to music across my home network. Most excellent work, Xbox dudes.

Lingotto in Italy

The original Fiat factory has a test track around the roof – although the factory is now a conference center – the track remains, check this very nice gallery of photos from thingsmagazine.net
