Whats your Dunbar number?

Interesting article over at Web Worker Daily – I think my Dunbar number is low, probably about 100/120. Keeping track of all these relationships is difficult – but if you look around, the tools are out there to help you.

For example – Steve Clayton showed me a tool called Terraminds, which allows you to search exclusively inside the Twitter eco-system, I’ve been experimenting to find out whether people are twittering about me, or AdCenter or the competition – it means that I don’t have to follow these people on twitter, I can just look at the whole eco-system at once.

This really adds to one of the reasons I suggested you should be using Twitter, it’s a ‘pull’ environment which is less intrusive than mail and IM – so people are using it to capture digital ephemera and thoughts.

I’m convinced this is where all the fast moving conversations are happening on the web. Try terraminds with some search terms and you’ll see the buzz happening.

Ikea – put your Ektorp opposite your Jerker?

Welcome to IKEA United KingdomAn lot of the furniture in my house comes from Ikea – it is well priced, nicely designed and replaceable if tastes change.

I have Billy bookcases, Data cutlery, Ektorp chairs and a Frederik desk in my office, but I have always wondered how Ikea decides on the funny names for each of their products?

In turns out that there is a system (it is Scandinavian after all) and the lovely wikipedia community have them all written down.

Check out the (not so secret) system after the jump

Is she really going out with him?

clip_image001It seems like Nicolas Sarkozy *might* be about to get married to singer, ex-supermodel, ex-Mick Jagger girlfriend and tyre empire heiress – Carla Bruni.

Really – he is such a handsome and powerful man – I cannot see what he sees in Ms Bruni, I mean look at this picture (click to enlarge). Clearly Ms Bruni is batting *way* of her league and she needs to be a bit more realistic.

Most surprisingly for me is the fact that both of her albums have been excellent (usually supermodel + music != good), but Quelqu’un m’a dit is one of the of my favourite french language albums and the follow up No Promises is lovely as well.

Can you type?

When I was a cub scout, they told me that all the essential skills in life were included on the list of badges I could work at – Knots, Cooking and Orienteering – all of which have been absolutely indispensable in the intervening 30 years (ahem).

These days they have an Information Technology badge and kids going through the scout movement have a chance to learn essential skills – but what about you?

Probably the most basic skill you need (if you use a computer regularly) is the ability to type, and it is an often overlooked essential. Until now…

Keybr.Com is a slick looking online typing trainer – which throws seemingly weird words for you to practice your touch typing skills on. It has settings for multiple languages and keyboards, so you can practice in your native language. I’ve been hitting about 50 words a minute, with no errors – any faster and I start to drop characters. I wonder if practice will benefit me much after all the years of bad habits.

How is your touch typing?

Best Present – 3 little pigs

There was a lot of talk before Christmas about giving charity gifts, but despite all the publicity, I wasn’t expecting to get some pigs in my Christmas stocking:

lying, cheating whores.

Every last one of the lying, cheating whores who work in Whitehall or the White House should be forced to sit and watch this video at HBO. Produced and hosted by James Gandolfini, it tells the story of ten soldiers who have returned home from Iraq and have ended up celebrating their ‘alive day’, the date on which they didn’t die.

image

It is truly a sobering hour of television – splicing together short interviews with clips from the battlefields of Iraq – some of them shot and released by insurgents. You can hear shouts of ‘Allah Akhbar’ as military vehicles explode and the smoke and dust clears to reveal yet more tragedy.

I was one of the many who were fooled by our ‘leaders’, one of the many that supported the war and the ‘fight against terrorism’. In the last 4 years, Over 4000 coalition soldiers have been killed (and countless Iraqis), and will not celebrate their alive-day, I’m not sure who are the lucky ones – but these 10 brave people still believe that they are the lucky ones.

The rest of us – especially those so called leaders – can and should, be truly ashamed of ourselves.

What’s a boy to do?

this is impressive stuff…

Imogen Heap singing ‘Just for Now’ live on French TV, and recreating the song from scratch, live – with a sampler and sequencer. Very clever indeed!

Genius!
