Westcliff on Sea – 1946

Another great example of a ‘colourised’ postcard that would today be replaced by an email, or even an SMS message, “Rita and I hope to come to Torquay tomorrow". Sent to Forest Road in Torquay in 1946 (I think). Click more for the message.

Watersmeet, near Lynmouth – 1903

A slightly unusual postcard – with the message on the front of the card, and a shrunken image – send from Watersmeet near Lynmouth (its part of the National Trust now) to Westdown in Ilfracombe in 1903. Click more to see the reverse of the card.

Walmer Castle, Kent – 1932

Walmer Castle is in Kent and was built in the 16th Century by Henry VIII – this post card was sent a little later, in 1932  to Miss Warren in New Malden Surrey. Click more to read the message.

Scalby Mills, Scarborough – 1918

Another painted postcard from Scalby Mills in Scarborough – sent in 1918 to Summer Hill in Cork, Ireland.  You can see how this location looks today on Live Maps. Click More to see the message.

X Marks the spot – Morecambe – 1924

We are here – I love the way that ‘X’ marks the spot of where this person stayed during their visit to Morecambe. I also notice the fact that they have chosen a right old miserable day to photograph the West End in Morecambe, with waves crashing into the crowded prom. Sent in 1924 to [...]

King Umberto – Rome – 1900

This is one of my favourite post cards – sent in 1900 from Rome to Buffalo, NY, USA – I love the opening ‘My Dear Lady Von B…’ and the grandeur of the post card – it really is a beautiful thing to have and hold.
King Umberto I seemed to be very unpopular – [...]

Branksome Chine – Dorset – 1930’s

I think Branksome Chine is in Dorset – although the pictures online  have nothing in common with the postcard above.  This lovely card was sent to Fareham in Hampshire in 1930-something – click more for the full message.

Dover from Shakespeare Cliff – 1918

Dover from Shakespeare Cliff – not the prettiest of views, but all the same…sent to Quarry Bank in Staffs in September 1918. There seems to be a lot less ferry traffic than more recent pictures. Click more for the full (faded) message.

Forth Road Bridge, Scotland – the sixties…

What a beauty – half reference book, half postcard – the Forth Road Bridge is featured on this card sent to Grove Road in Chatham, Kent (in I’d imagine – the 50’s), as Saint rightly points out in the comments – the Forth Road Bridge opened in 1964 – so its a later card – [...]

HMS Victory – Portsmouth – sent in 1955

HMS Victory, Portsmouth – sent to Swindon in 1955 – another postcard the seems to contain the sort of message that would today be sent via a text or an email. Click more to see the full message.
