Just listened to the new album by Royksopp – The Understanding, what an excellent piece of work. Picking up where they left off with the brilliant Melody AM, they delivered a nicely rounded package of chilled out tunes, combined with a fair amount of deep shuffly house. Once again they’ve picked up some amazing (relatively unknown) vocalists to add to the mix (this is the group that led me to the amazing Erlend Oye). Standout tracks for me, are the opener – Triumphant, and Alpha Male, which is a clever building track that reminds me of 80′s space rock along the way. Excellent album – if you liked Melody AM, then you’ll love this.

Lets go fishing for a dream
Lets find some place new
Somewhere we can be ourselves, some of the time
Lose your heart, I’ll lose my mind
We’ll make quite a pair, Dazzling all the time
Celebrity parties, The red carpet mile
Nothing is too good there for my girl
All of this world – is gonna see you shine…
Turin Brakes – Lets go fishing for a dream (2005)
Or so we all sang as we wandered away from Brixton Academy last night after the final night of three for Athlete in London.

What an amazing gig…they played stuff from both albums – including the most amazing version 0f Wires…great sound, good lights and good interaction with the crowd – even asking everyone to get on each others shoulders for the last song. Highlight for me was the weirdo keyboard player who played a theramin really well. I managed to forget my camera, so took just a few pictures with my mobile…the best of which are on flickr.
Two days have passed
And all I want is to
feel better
They won’t be back
And a long weekend is coming up
I left the house
It was just to see you
For an hour
Hoping for two
I was short of breath
As I passed the doorman for a second time
And it rained all day
I don’t have a raincoat of my own
I then arrived
Ten minutes
early with no smokes
And I was broke
Without a smoke
All of the time
I thought I was crazy ‘cos you told me so
It was profound
Like the piano I was humbled by
Our tongues may have touched
But all I remember was your nose
And I suppose
Our eyes were closed
Two days have passed
And all I want is gone
For good this time
The Second Part – The Dears (2005)
Trudging slowly over wet sand
Back to the bench where your clothes were stolen
This is the coastal town
That they forgot to close down
Armageddon – come armageddon!
Come, armageddon! come!
Everyday is like sunday
Everyday is silent and grey
Hide on the promenade
Etch a postcard :
How I dearly wish I was not here
In the seaside town
…that they forgot to bomb
Come, come, come – nuclear bomb
Everyday is like sunday
Everyday is silent and grey
Trudging back over pebbles and sand
And a strange dust lands on your hands
(and on your face…)
(on your face …)
Everyday is like sunday
Win yourself a cheap tray
Share some greased tea with me
Everyday is silent and grey
Every day is like Sunday – Morrissey/Marr
If a double decker bus
Crashes into us
To die by your side
Is such a heavenly way to die
And if a ten ton truck,
Kills the both of us, (So what!)
To die by your side
Well, the pleasure, the priviledge is mine.
There is a light that never sleeps – Morrissey
but the new Morrissey live album – Live at Earls Court – is truly amazing. A mix of songs from last years ‘You are the Quarry’ and stuff from his earlier works. There are some truly majestic works on here…a great version of ‘Irish Blood, English Heart’ and ‘Don’t make fun of Daddys Voice’ and the stand-out track for me ‘The more you ignore me, the closer I get’. Theres also a point that makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up…on ‘there is a light that never goes out…’ Morrissey sings ‘To die by your side, is such a heavenly way to die….’, and you can hear the whole crowd singing along….truly remarkable.

I have a strange relationship with Morrisseys music…at the peak of The Smiths popularity, I hated him…and them…hated their music and image, but somewhere recently I had a renaissance and really started to enjoy his performance, and lyrics. This live album is a perfect example of what I like…theres a pomp and occasion which I really appreciate – along with some really tight music and lyrics which make for a fantastic live event.
Thought that i could organise freedom
How scandinavian of me
You sussed it out, didn’t you?
Genius!
I’d forgotten how good live music could be – its been ages since I checked out a live gig, but Tuesday night saw me in London at the Electric Ballroom in Camden to see The Dears from Montreal.

This six piece first popped onto my radar courtesy of the dude working in HMV London, as I wandered round I was listening to the shop PA playing tracks from their recent album – No Cities Left. They are often compared to The Smiths or the lead singer to Damon Albarn – but I prefer to think of it as simply really cool power pop, huge anthemic songs with a strong voice to top it all. The Electric Ballroom is still intimate enough to get a good feel for a band, and they managed to really rock the place – key tracks like 22:Death of all the Romance and We Can Have It, sat well alongside some new material. Check the album out, its well worth the ten quid, and if you get a chance to see them live…then take me with you!
