A Friday hero speaks #13 – Learning

brando

“Never confuse the size of your paycheck with the size of your talent” – Marlon Brando

Give some thought to that, the next time you are pushing for the next grade or the next payrise, the two things are not always related. Keep developing, keep learning and then maybe you’ll be worth it.

What are you doing to keep developing? Is it time to step up a gear?

A Friday hero speaks #12 – Execution

Salinger

“Why the hell don’tcha, instead of keep saying it?” -  JD Salinger, 1.1.1919 to 27.1.2010

And isn’t that exactly what we need, a few more people who just get on with stuff rather than writing down what they are going to do – you can invest all the time and money in the world in systems, processes, tools and fancy devices – but nothing works quite as well as writing a list on decent piece of paper, and then crossing the items through as you execute.

A Friday hero speaks #11 – attention

redford

It’s hard to pay attention these days because of multiple affects of the information technology nowadays. You tend to develop a faster, speedier mind, but I don’t think it’s necessarily broader or smarter. Robert Redford

So, is he right? I find the more information I get, the more information I crave – and that leads to distraction and lack of attention on the really important things. This week I’ve been thinking a lot about the urgent and important matrix – not only am I using it on my tasks, but I’m using it on my information streams (RSS, Social Networks etc) and purging what its really distracting me.

What are you doing to stay focused?

A Friday hero speaks #10 – Snow and Ice edition

steinbeck

“I’ve lived in good climate, and it bores the hell out of me. I like weather rather than climate”, John Steinbeck.

Pretty relevant this week after the UK has been ‘paralysed’ by snow and ice. I’ve quite enjoyed it, the ‘extreme’ weather has reminded me that I’m alive, just like some sunshine does the same.

I just wish we had more exciting weather in the UK!

A Friday hero speaks #9 – determination

gregory peck

You have to dream, you have to have a vision, and you have to set a goal for yourself that might even scare you a little because sometimes that seems far beyond your reach. Then I think you have to develop a kind of resistance to rejection, and to the disappointments that are sure to come your way – Gregory Peck

And that’s how it is – find your North Star (make it a stretch goal) and take steps toward it every day, be persistent and determined.

What keeps you flying true to your goal?

A Friday Hero speaks #8 – New Years Day Special!

sinatra

I feel sorry for people who don’t drink. When they wake up in the morning, that’s as good as they’re going to feel all day – Frank Sinatra

Today is the one day you can forget any guilt about getting into your cups whilst celebrating the arrival of the New Year – hope you had good quality booze (mines a Vodka), and enjoy, HAPPY NEW YEAR!

With Sinatra singing us in – I have a feeling its going to be a very good year.

A Friday Hero(ine) speaks #7 – Love

bardot

Do you have to have a reason for loving? – Brigitte Bardot

On this special day – nothing remotely business like for me – just a simple quote from a beautiful woman.

I’m celebrating with at my brothers with my beautiful family.

I hope you are with the people you love today…

Friday Hero Speaks #6 – Authenticity

kerouac “Great things are not accomplished by those who yield to trends and fads and popular opinion.” – Jack Kerouac

When I think of all the high achievers I admire, one of the things they have in common is that they are authentic. The quality that makes them trustworthy and genuine is plain to see. Even if you don’t agree with every action, their authenticity allows you to make a judgement based on their intentions as well as the outcomes.

Friday Hero Speaks #5 – Self Development…

ali

I hated every minute of training, but I said, "Don’t quit. Suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion." – Muhammad Ali

As Nicholas Bate said this week – for phenomenal success you need persistence. Always be improving yourself and your chances of success in whatever you choose, can only grow.

What keeps you fighting?

A hero speaks #4 – time management…

Vladimir-Nabokov-001

I confess, I do not believe in time. – Vladimir Nabokov

I’m slowly coming to the conclusion that time management is a myth – task management is where we should be focused. Validating the task, planning the task and executing the task – if it’s righteous, then it doesn’t matter how long it takes.

Focus on whether the task is the right thing to do – not how long it will take.
