Have to travel? Take some tips…

They say that ‘Hell is other People’, and at no time is that more true than when you spend 9 hours on a plane. Here are some of my tips that might make that trip bearable.

  • Smile & talk to the people around you – you might make a great contact
  • Make sure the Zune or Ipod is fully charged
  • Bring a great book – good fiction can eat the hours away (more on that one to come!)
  • Be polite to the cabin crew – it will pay dividends
  • Charge those batteries – laptop/DVD/MP3 – you want your toys!
  • Bring a big bottle of water
  • Bring something to take notes – great ideas happen in the air
  • Don’t dismiss the movies – there is always something you haven’t seen
  • Smile – it will be over soon, and you’ll be in a new exciting place, meeting people that you enjoy being with

What are your tips for making flights more bearable?

    I have a theory about getting upgraded which I’ll share with you in private Matt! :-)

    Other than that, make sure you take some decent headphones. You don’t have to spend £300 on Bose either. Sony do some good noise-cancelling ones.

    Also think about taking your own food on the flight. A few years ago BA had a catering strike and the pret sandwiches I had on that flight were one of the nicest meals I’ve ever had!

    @mel – I also have a theory – email please!

    Good suggestion on the headphones – I use Sony isolating earbuds that do a great job of plane noise as well as clarity of music. I can’t sleep with full headphones, so the Bose look lovely, but functionally don’t help me.

    Taking your own food – I’m always a bit wary of that, if everyone did it, the smells might be a bit antisocial. I notice that you can pick up a Gordon Ramsay plane food picnic in T5, I expect that would be scrummy. Terminal 5 has plenty of good eateries that can do some takeaway options.

    I may experiment the next time I am in Premium Economy.
