I got ‘The Great Gatsby’ – and I’m looking forward to reading it this summer!

This is interesting to me because in the States every kid has to read The Great Gatsby in school. Many of the themes in the book are american-centric, and I assume that kids in the UK do not read it in school. Your blog entry leads me to believe you haven’t read it before. I am curious as to what you think of it.
Have you seen the film with Robert Redford and Mia Farrow?

I think I’ve seen the film, but never read the book…I think each country has their own take on the classics that *have* to be read in school.
I had to do Animal Farm and 1984, lots of Shakespeare and much poetry from Ted Hughes and WH Auden.
I’m looking forward to reading this…maybe will offer some insights to the US that I don’t get from my visits.

We did the Shakespeare thing, as well as 1984 and Animal Farm. I believe you may learn something, but more about the darker side of American greed and social hierarchies … of the 1920s at least. I think one gets a better sense of people by visiting, which you do often. But try to get out of the M$ compound sometime
