I didn’t watch the Brits this week – knowing that I would be disappointed as usual – but this seems to have been a highlight.

The Valley of Rocks – Lynton – nice evocative picture – almost looks like a movie shot towards the sea. Sent from Lee Road, Lynton to Imperial Road, Wood Green in London in 1924.

Took a drive across the Lincolnshire wolds today – to Sutton-on-Sea, and found ourselves in the midst of some serious sea fog. I love the look of these little beach huts, lined up against the grey of the promenade and the fog rolling in from the North Sea. Apparently, some of these huts sell for between 9 and 11 thousand pounds – which is astonishing for something a little larger than a shed, but I can see the attraction.
Given the grey weather and the chill in the air – we did the only proper thing, fish and chips at ‘The Dolphin‘ which is on the main street away from the center of Sutton. It is absolutely spot on, sitting in a timewarp but serving fantastic fish and chips, with bread and butter and a tea for a little over 6 pounds. Perfect.

My friend Stacie said it well, when she suggested that each country has its own oddities and things that individualise it, for me as a kid I always thought of the US as the place where all the cops carried guns and where cowboys lived.
Nowadays that clearly isn’t the case, all the cops in the UK carry guns – and the cowboys turned out to be gay, but still the US is the only one of the two countries where you can carry a gun legally, so I always wanted to try shooting a handgun when I was over there – and now I know it’s relatively easy to take that opportunity.
I got taken to Wades Eastside Guns and Indoor Range in Bellevue for a Saturday morning shooting handguns – it was a truly memorable experience.

I read somewhere last week that if Guy Garvey of Elbow was to sing the telephone directory, it would be interesting. I’m not 100% sure I’d agree, but Elbow write enough brilliant songs that he’ll never need to revert to the Yellow Pages.
Last night – we went to the Porchester Hall in Paddington to see Elbow play an intimate gig ahead of a full scale tour in April, the venue holds I guess about 500 people with a relatively small stage at one end. It was just big enough for Elbow and a small string section who accompanied them on about 6 or 7 songs.
Sound was excellent – although I think Mr Garvey was suffering with his monitor earplugs and the aftermath of a cold that he mentioned on the radio last week – however it didn’t hinder him too much as his voice sounded perfect.
