Introducing the the MacBook Air Manila Case…

Only $300 for the case (that could be an envelope), and a mere twenty bucks for the Kabbalah string, two cults covered in one order…perfect! Found on Gizmodo

Flawless – in more ways than one

They often say that good stories make good films – admittedly that’s a truism, but in this case it really works. Flawless has two of my favourite actors in it, Michael Caine and Joss Ackland – alongside Demi Moore in a beautifully shot heist film set in the 1960′s.

Don’t expect the glamour and fast editing of Oceans 13 for this one – its an old fashioned robbery movie set in a fictional diamond company in central London, with an interesting story set around an amazing robbery. I’m not going to give too much away, but Caine is excellent as the night-cleaner, and Demi Moore plays the part of of hard done by manager in the boys club environment of the diamond industry.

However, it is not just the stars that make this shine – the screenplay is lovely, the cinematography is stunning and the timing as the story unfolds is just perfect. Its an old fashioned story without all the bells and whistles of most modern heist movies – which unfortunately means it will get missed by most people, don’t be one of them

Juno – the quirky one on the list…

I noticed whilst reading the Golden Globe awards news and now the BAFTA nominations that there was a few films I hadn’t seen on the list – specifically Juno pops up a couple of times (best Musical or Comedy and best Screenplay), so I thought I should check it out and see what the scoop is.

Juno is about a girl called Juno McGuff (Ellen Page), a teenager living a relatively normal life in smalltown USA, she’s self-assured, smart, tomboyish and cynical – and find herself pregnant after the first time with her boyfriend Paulie Bleeker (played by Michael Cera from Superbad). Juno decides that adoption is the best route and embarks on a series of uncomfortable encounters with a prospective adoptive couple who are starting to show their own cracks.

Its an indie type comedy, quirky and quite dark – but utterly enjoyable. The lead actress deserves her best actress nominations as she plays the part brilliantly, she is completely believable in the part being both pragmatic and dreamlike as she handles the seismic shift in her life. Its funny, culturally on-the-money and really well written. Juno comes out in the UK on 1st February.

BBC iPlayer – a new kind of magic video?

Due to some crazy scheduling on Sunday evening there were three programmes we wanted to watch all starting in the same hour. The Sky + box is only ever going to be good enough to handle two of these, so we had to forsake one of them.

Louis Theroux Behind Bars was the loser in the game (or maybe I was the loser, because I really wanted to see this one), and so I thought I would check out the marvellous BBC iPlayer to watch again.

What a great innovation, the BBC puts all its programmes for the past 7 days online for on-demand viewing. You can log onto the site and surf through their channel guide or pick a highlight listed. I was able to watch Louis Theroux in full screen glory, great quality with good sound.

There are some drawbacks – it doesn’t work if you are outside the UK, which I guess is for copyright/legal issues, its a massive shame because I’d love to use this when I’m travelling and I want to see programmes quickly. I guess there are ways round this, but I’d love to find a way that someone could register and still get access whilst out of the country – this would make it an essential business tool.

Well done beeb – thats what I like to see my license fee being spent on.

Oh – and the programme? Excellent TV – Louis Theroux (I am a massive fan – so any review would be biased) goes inside St Quentin jail in the US and interviews inmates and guards…brilliant stuff – you can watch it just by clicking here.

Man-Flu

As I predicted yesterday – I have a steeenking cold, so I can’t be bothered to post anything sensible – so just some things that piqued my interest as I sipped on a Max-Strength Lemsip. Apparently research shows us that to-do lists are useful (which reminds me, I must make a list of things to-do tomorrow). Some people are starting to think that Google and Wikipedia are dulling the learning process by spoon feeding information (not sure I agree with this one – but I’ll leave it to you to decide). This woman, took Crystal Meth and had a heart attack leaving her in intensive care for 9 days – she is suing her dealer (I’ll be interested to see how this one goes in court).

I’ll be better tomorrow – for sure…
