There Will Be Blood is the real deal, a bona fide genuine classic of a movie. A complete epic that will win Oscars and all sorts of other awards, and end up in top-tens, best-ofs and end of year lists.

Daniel Day-Lewis plays Daniel Plainview, an oil prospecting roughneck in California in the late 1800’s - whose lust for wealth finds him buying up ranches and becoming one of the most successful oil men in the early 20th century. Its a tale of brutality, greed and vengeance.

Day-Lewis is absolutely brilliant, playing the part with unflinching brutality, and lightness of touch where the script needs it. There is a lot of silence in the film, and its here where Day-Lewis is able to really shine, his physical presence as Plainview is something to behold.

The story is fantastic, the script is good and the direction (Paul Thomas Anderson) is superb.

Rightly so then, 8 Oscar nominations and almost universal acclaim. Epic.
