I noticed whilst reading the Golden Globe awards news and now the BAFTA nominations that there was a few films I hadn’t seen on the list - specifically Juno pops up a couple of times (best Musical or Comedy and best Screenplay), so I thought I should check it out and see what the scoop is.
Juno is about a girl called Juno McGuff (Ellen Page), a teenager living a relatively normal life in smalltown USA, she’s self-assured, smart, tomboyish and cynical - and find herself pregnant after the first time with her boyfriend Paulie Bleeker (played by Michael Cera from Superbad). Juno decides that adoption is the best route and embarks on a series of uncomfortable encounters with a prospective adoptive couple who are starting to show their own cracks.
Its an indie type comedy, quirky and quite dark - but utterly enjoyable. The lead actress deserves her best actress nominations as she plays the part brilliantly, she is completely believable in the part being both pragmatic and dreamlike as she handles the seismic shift in her life. Its funny, culturally on-the-money and really well written. Juno comes out in the UK on 1st February.
