40 by 40 – to save myself…

bigman icon I nicknamed myself bigman – sort of – I started DJ’ing somewhere and a few people called me it…’Hi, Big Man…hows it going’? I thought it was funny, and so came up with a little rhyme when I had the mic in my hand, “the Big Man with the big plan”, and it stuck.

It was fun, and deserved – I’m a big man, I take 3XL (and struggle to find stuff I like) – and I’m well overweight and seriously unfit, my weight affects my health, my work, the fun I can have and the places I can go. It stops me buying certain clothes – and it makes me lazy. I’m not stupid, and I know all the facts – obesity is a major cause of health problems, diabetes and heart disease.

And I don’t want to die.

So today is a marked day in my calendar – its my birthday next week, and I’ve set myself a target to lose some weight and regain some fitness – and maybe add a few birthdays onto my life. If I write this down, it’ll seem more possible to me – that’s what I do at work, big projects never look quite as complicated when they are written down and you can see the stages.

I’ve set myself a long timeline, but a massive target – I’m going to lose 40 kilos, by the time I’m 40 – that’s two years and one week away.  I’ve joined the gym and I’m adjusting my diet, I’m starting gently with exercise – but I’m absolutely determined to see this through and save my own life. Then I can be my own hero.

The only slightly geeky part – I’ll be tracking my weight loss, and exercise online at Traineo – click here to see my profile. if you swing by here and you have any tips (specifically regarding staying motivated) then I’d love to hear them.

bigman_icon I’ll still be theBIGman….right?

the special one?

So, its no surprise (to me anyway) that Jose Mourinho has been arrested (anyone who has seen that idiot on the TV has seen that he has significant anger management issues) – but I am slightly puzzled as to why his dog is called ‘Guillit’.

Any similarity?

dull flame of desire

I love your eyes, my dear
Their splendid sparkling fire
When suddenly you raise them so
To cast a swift embracing glance
Like lightning flashing in the sky
But there’s a charm that is greater still
When my love’s eyes are lowered
When all is fired by passion’s kiss
And through the downcast lashes
I see the dull flame of desire

goodbye my friend

Its impossible to count how many of these babies I’ve been through…from my very first portable recorder taping tunes from the radio, through to making mix tapes for girls I was madly ‘in love with’ and onwards to having them duplicated in batches of 50 when I started DJ’ing seriously.

I have (thanks to Nick) a whole archive of DJ mixes from my days in The Sandmen (whoosh, dangerous knowledge and other great demos), each one filled with 90 mins of musical ephemera from ‘back in the day’. Listening back to those old school mixes is sometimes shocking, with some dodgy mixing – but always great tunes and fantastic memories I know I have a box full of these things around somewhere – and probably not even a player to play them on.

So its sad to hear that they will no longer be stocking them – we’ve all moved on, firstly to CD’s – when it was cheap enough to make your mixes on a PC and have them run off on CDR – and now onto MP3′s and podcasts, which means I don’t have to make much effort at all to get a mix out to people that want one.

camper than christmas…

Belarus - KoldunChannel hopping last night, I found myself drawn (like a moth to a flame) to the semi-final of the Eurovision Song Contest, pure car-crash TV which was designed to whittle 24 of the ‘also-rans’ down to 10…which would then be added to the pre-qualified 14 for the big showcase final from Helsinki on Saturday night. The UK (with the mighty Scooch) pre qualify as one of the ‘big 4′, i.e. the 4 nations that pay the most towards this circus, and added to the big 4 are the best 10 performers from last year, but for me – last nights semi-final was the jewel in the crown, as central, eastern and extremely far away Europe battled it out to make it to the final.

The list of ten qualifiers from the semi – features a lot of countries that end in ‘…ia’ – which might give you an indication of who is really interested in the event. Macedona, Serbia, Slovenia, Georgia, Latvia (with there Il Divo like entry), Bulgaria and Moldova all made it through.

Serbia - Marija ŠERIFOVIĆI think that Belarus (the Princess Diana lookalike – Koldun) and Serbias Marija Serifovic (left) stand the best chance of these qualifiers – although I was surprised that the Erasure-alike Danish entry didn’t go through – ‘Drama Queen by DQ‘ – giant transvestite was hysterical, and the Israeli entry (Push the Button by Teapacks) which was genius in its crapness.

Saturdays final should be an absolute doozy…BBC1, Saturday @ 8.00pm
