I wanna wish you away…

She Wants RevengeShe Wants Revenge - She Wants Revenge : I’m late to the party with this one, but I’m really glad I decided to buy this one after an impulse listen inspired by the cover image. Inevitably, this will be lumped in with the Editors & Interpol as one of the latest crop of ’sounds like Curtis/Joy Division’ bands, but there is so much more to offer on this superb debut album. She Wants Revenge covers loads of my musical bases, dark electronic pop - much more intense than the bands mentioned before. I’m hearing influences from early Depeche Mode, Human League and maybe some Joy Division in there. The tracks are long, brooding slabs of building electro, with dark sometimes even nasty vocals over the top. The first two tracks span 10 minutes and theres not a moment of boredom for the whole album. I particularly like ‘Out of Control’ and ‘Broken promises for Broken Hearts’, and the mighty ‘Tear you apart’ is an awesome track with a brilliantly dark chorus:

I want to hold you close,
skin pressed against me tight
lie still, close your eyes girl,
so lovely, it feels so right.

I want to hold you close,
soft breast, kneaded hard,
as I whisper in your ear,
I want to fucking tear you apart.

Its no gentle love song, menacing in word and deed the vocal ever so slightly processed - with a low rumbling bassline in the background - it generates some filmic, vicious images

Its impossible for me to pick a favourite track on this album - its all very good. There are some classic synth lines, neatly shuffling drum lines, and just the right amount of guitar and bass to make it sound tough. I’m loathed to review this one, in case anyone finds out my secret - but I owe it to the world to press ‘post’ now (especially as I found this one pretty late). Superb album - in line for my top ten this year.
