“Easy” doesn’t enter into grown-up life.

Nicholas Cage and Michael Caine - The Weather ManAhead of a week of travel (more later) – I took an evening out and went for dinner and the cinema yesterday – we saw ‘The Weather Man’, a new Nicolas Cage movie with Michael Caine sharing the top billing. The story is that Cage plays Dave Spritzer a Chicago weather man who finds that he has a shot at the national job presenting weather on ‘Hello America’ – intertwined with this is the deterioration of his fathers health (Caine) and the derailing of his children and the poor relationship he has with his estranged wife. I’m not going to speak to anymore of the story, but this is truly a very funny film – the blackest, darkest humour you can imagine, which perfectly suits Nicolas Cage and Michael Caine who play equally stunning parts as father and son. Its caringly directed and written and doesn’t bring itself down to the common Hollywood denominator that ‘life is perfect’ – it keeps it straight, ‘life sometimes sucks -its how we deal with that.’ See this film, it really will make you smile, and think – which is rarer and rarer in the cinema today.
