I wanted to hate…
But I just couldn’t do it…I managed to get an early copy of the album by 411 – Between the Sheets, usually I hate girl bands – but these girls have got something different.
Once I had forgiven them for sampling Portishead, I listened to this with open ears and I have to say I really like the album. Yeah, OK, it’s sweet poppy R&B, but the singing is good, the writing just a little bit edgy and at least one or two of the tunes are stand-out brilliant.
The album opens with ‘On My Knees’ featuring Ghostface Killah…which was a great single and stands the test of a thousand radio listens (I even think they added an extra verse to the album version). Theres a classy track called China Girl – on which the keyboards sound brilliant. The whole album continues in the same vein of form….cooler than the Sugababes, way more relevant than All Saints/Shaznay/Appleton and infinitely more accessible that the R&B acts from the US.
The only possible downside is the fact that they seem to either hate men, or doubt that men could ever be nice to them….shame really….I’d try my hardest for them.
